UV Patch vs. Marine Epoxy: Which One for Your Repair?

Two-part marine epoxy has been the default boat repair for decades, and there's a reason for that. It's strong, it fills gaps, it can be shaped and faired until the repair disappears, and it's proven over a very long time.
A UV-cured patch is a different tool. Sometimes it's the better one. Sometimes it isn't. Here's how to tell.
How each one actually works
Two-part epoxy cures through a chemical reaction between resin and hardener. You mix them in a specific ratio, and from that moment you're working against a clock — pot life is typically minutes to tens of minutes depending on the product and the temperature. Full cure takes hours to days.
A UV-cured patch is fiberglass reinforcement pre-impregnated with a resin that only hardens when it sees ultraviolet light. It stays workable indefinitely in a sealed pouch. Cut it, press it on, and it cures in 5–10 minutes of direct sunlight — or under a UV light when there's no sun.
The practical difference is where the clock starts. With epoxy, the clock starts when you mix. With a UV patch, the clock starts when you expose it to light — which means it starts when you're ready.
Where the patch wins
- Speed. Ten minutes versus hours before the boat can go back in.
- Field and dockside repairs. No mixing surface, no measuring, no cups, no stir sticks, nothing to dispose of. This is the difference between fixing something at the ramp and trailering home.
- No waste. Cut what you need; the rest stays sealed and usable. Mixed epoxy that outlives its pot life is gone.
- No mix-ratio errors. Off-ratio epoxy doesn't fully cure, and you often don't find out until later. There's no ratio to get wrong on a patch.
- Polyethylene. Kayaks, canoes, poly tanks and livewells. Most epoxies don't bond to polyethylene at all — it's the material that sends people looking for a second option after the first one fails.
- Working in awkward positions. Nothing sags or runs while you hold it against a vertical or overhead surface waiting for a kick.
Where epoxy wins
Being straight about this is more useful than pretending otherwise.
- Structural repair and layup. When you're rebuilding laminate, replacing a section of hull, or restoring strength to a load-bearing part, epoxy with proper glass schedule is the correct repair. A patch seals damage; it doesn't rebuild structure.
- Filling gaps and missing material. Thickened epoxy fills voids, rebuilds edges, and bridges gaps. A patch spans a hole but doesn't fill volume behind it.
- Bonding two parts together. Epoxy is an adhesive as well as a matrix. A patch covers a surface.
- Fairing to invisible. Epoxy can be shaped, sanded, and faired into the surrounding hull until you can't find the repair. A cured patch can be sanded and painted, but it's a patch.
- No light available at all. Deep inside a hull with no way to get a UV light in, epoxy cures regardless.
The decision, in one line
- Sealing damage in sound material, fast, possibly in the field → UV patch.
- Restoring structure, filling volume, or bonding parts → epoxy.
- Polyethylene → UV patch, because epoxy usually isn't an option.
- A repair you need invisible → epoxy, or a patch plus fairing and paint.
What they share
Both need a clean, dry, properly prepped surface. Neither bonds to wax, oxidation, or a damp hull. Both fail for the same reason more often than any other: someone skipped the prep.
Neither one is rated for pressurized systems in the context we're discussing — Solar Patch explicitly isn't, and structural pressure applications need engineered solutions rather than field repairs.

Using both
Plenty of people carry both, and that's a sensible position rather than a compromise. Epoxy in the shop for the jobs that need rebuilding. A Solar Patch and a UV Cure Light in the dry bag for the ones that need to be fixed now, on the water, before the trip ends.
