A cracked poly tank is one of those repairs where the quote comes back higher than the tank is worth. Solar Patch bonds to polyethylene, PVC, ABS, fiberglass, and steel, and cures rock-hard in 5–10 minutes of sunlight — so a split stock tank or a cracked utility container doesn't have to mean a replacement.

Why Tanks Are Hard to Fix

Most tanks are made from polyethylene, and polyethylene is the material almost nothing sticks to. That's why it's used for tanks in the first place — it resists chemicals, UV, and impact, and it flexes instead of shattering. Those same properties defeat most consumer epoxies, glues, and tapes.

If you've already tried something that let go after a week, that's usually why. It wasn't a bad repair — it was a material problem.

Choosing a Size

Cover the damage with about an inch of sound material all the way around. Cracks in tanks tend to travel with flex and thermal cycling, so cover the whole crack and past its end.

Small (3" × 6") — punctures, short cracks

Medium (6" × 9") — splits, larger impact damage

Large (9" × 12") — long cracks, seam sections

Before You Start

Drain the tank below the damage and let the area dry completely. The surface must be clean and dry at application — Solar Patch is waterproof once cured, but it won't bond to a wet surface.

Scuff the area, wipe it clean, and let it dry fully. On a tank that's held anything oily or chemical, cleaning matters more than usual.

When Solar Patch Isn't the Right Call

Pressurized tanks. Solar Patch is not rated for pressurized systems. Don't use it on a pressure vessel, an air tank, or anything under load.

Drinking water tanks. We don't have potable-water certification for this product. Don't use it on tanks that supply drinking water for people or livestock.

Tanks holding reactive chemicals. Check compatibility with your specific contents before repairing.

Structural failure. If a tank wall is deformed, bulging, or failing across a large area, patching a crack won't fix the underlying problem.

A tank you can't drain. The surface has to be dry.

Tank Repair FAQ

Will it stick to a poly tank when nothing else has? Polyethylene is one of Solar Patch's rated substrates, which is unusual — most consumer repair products aren't rated for it.

Can I repair a tank that's still full? No. Drain below the damage and dry the area first.

Will it hold up to UV outdoors? Cured Solar Patch is rigid and weather-resistant, rated to 200°C dry and 90°C wet.

Can I paint over it to match the tank? Yes, once fully cured.

Can I use it on a pressurized tank? No. Not rated for pressurized systems.
