Boat Keel Damage: What to Do

Every other part of your hull gets damaged by accident. The keel gets damaged by use.
Ramps, trailer bunks, sandbars, gravel launches, the last two feet of every beaching — the keel takes all of it, every trip, in the same place. That makes keel damage a wear problem rather than a damage event, and wear behaves differently than a puncture.
How to tell what you're looking at
- Surface abrasion. Scuffing, scratches, gelcoat or paint worn through to the material underneath. Cosmetic for now, but it's the stage where the protective layer is gone and the substrate starts taking the wear directly.
- Worn-through material. The keel strip or leading edge is visibly thinned. On fiberglass you may see the weave. On aluminum, the edge is rounded off where it used to be defined.
- Cracks or splits. Wear plus impact. This is where it stops being cosmetic.
- Soft or flexing keel. Stop. On many hulls the keel is structural, and a keel that moves under hand pressure means the problem is inside the laminate, not on it. That's a yard assessment, not a patch.
Repairing the wear
For abrasion and worn material with sound structure underneath, Solar Patch bonds to fiberglass, aluminum, and steel, and cures rigid in 5–10 minutes of sunlight.
- Get the boat out of the water and dry. The keel is the last part of a hull to dry — it sits lowest and holds moisture in every scrape. Give it longer than you'd give a topside repair.
- Scuff back to sound material. On fiberglass, past the worn gelcoat into solid laminate. On aluminum, through the oxide film to bright metal. Extend about two inches past the worn area in every direction.
- Clean and dry again. Ramp grit and trailer grease both live here.
- Cut the patch to cover the worn section plus about an inch of sound material all around. Keel damage runs long and narrow, so a strip cut from a Large (9"×12") often fits better than a square.
- Press it into the profile. The keel is a curved edge, not a flat panel. Work the patch around the radius so it makes contact everywhere rather than tenting over the apex — that tent is where the next ramp catches it.
- Cure 5–10 minutes in direct sun, or use a UV Cure Light if the hull's shaded on the trailer.
Once cured it can be sanded and painted.
Protecting it from the next one
Repairing keel wear fixes what already happened. If the boat launches off the same gravel ramp every weekend, it'll happen again in the same place.

Keel wear concentrates on the forward section, because that's what meets the ramp, the trailer bunk, and the bottom first when you beach. On a small boat, protecting the leading few feet covers most of what actually takes abuse.
The reliable way to size it: look at where your keel is already worn. That wear pattern is the honest map of where the next few seasons will land.
Common mistakes
- Patching over worn gelcoat instead of through it. If the surface is chalky and degraded, that's what the patch bonds to.
- Treating a structural keel problem as a surface problem. Flex means stop.
- Not drying long enough. The lowest point on the hull holds water in every scratch.
- Bridging the curve. A patch tented across the keel's apex has a gap under the exact spot that takes the impact.

When this won't work
- Structural keel damage. Flex, softness, or damage into a keel that carries load needs professional assessment.
- A boat in the water. Dry surface required.
- Full keel reconstruction. A patch restores the surface, not missing structure.
How long it lasts
Cured Solar Patch is rigid, waterproof, and rated to 200°C dry and 90°C wet. On a keel, the honest expectation is that it lasts as long as the abrasion allows — which is why protecting the repair matters as much as making it.
