Stock Tank Repair: What Holds and What Doesn't

A stock tank leads a hard life. It sits outdoors permanently, it freezes solid most winters, animals lean on it, and nobody notices a slow leak until the level's down and the ground around it is soft.

Most stock tank failures are one of two things, and they need different answers.

Start with the question nobody asks first

Solar Patch carries no potable-water certification. That applies to drinking water for people and for livestock.

So the honest framing for a stock tank is this: repairs made to the outside of the tank wall, where the cured patch isn't sitting in the water the animals drink, are a different situation from lining the inside of a trough. Where the damage can be reached and repaired from outside, that's the approach this guide covers. Where it can't, this isn't the right product and you're better off replacing the tank.

That's a narrower answer than most repair pages will give you. It's also the one that doesn't come back on you.

The two failure modes

Freeze splits. Water expands as it freezes and the ice pushes outward at the waterline. On poly tanks this shows as a split running horizontally along the level the water sat at. On galvanized steel it opens a seam. Both recur in the same place every winter unless something changes.

Rust-through. Galvanized tanks fail from the bottom. The zinc coating wears at the base where sediment and manure sit, then the steel underneath goes. By the time you see a pinhole from outside, the metal around it is usually thinner than it looks.

There's a third, less common one: cracks at the drain plug, from over-tightening or from a plug that froze with water behind it.

What you'll need

  • Solar Patch — Medium (6"×9") for a pinhole or short split, Large (9"×12") for a seam or a run
  • Coarse sandpaper, a scuff pad, or a wire brush for galvanized steel
  • Clean rags
  • A UV Cure Light — stock tanks are often in a shed row, under a lean-to, or shaded by the fence line

Before you start

Drain and move it. A stock tank is one of the few tanks you can tip. Empty it, roll it, and work on it in the sun — that solves drying and curing in one move.

Dry it properly. Galvanized seams wick water and hold it. Poly holds it in the split. Give it longer than feels necessary, especially if the tank's been full for months.

On galvanized steel, scuff to bright metal. The zinc coating and the oxide layer over it are both barriers. Dull grey to shiny, about two inches past the damage in every direction. If you're into red rust, take it back to sound metal — if the rust goes all the way through across a wide area, stop and read the last section.

On poly, scuff hard. Same rule as any polyethylene: visible texture, not a polish.

Step by step

  1. Find the full extent. On a freeze split, the visible crack is rarely the whole crack. Run your thumbnail along the line past both ends — you'll feel where it closes.
  2. Cut the patch to cover the damage plus about an inch of sound material all around, past both ends of any split. Stock tank walls curve — cut a long strip rather than a square.
  3. Scuff, clean, dry. In that order.
  4. Apply from the outside, pressing from the center out and working the patch into the wall's curve.
  5. Cure 5–10 minutes in direct sun, or use a UV light if the tank can't be moved into the open.
  6. Refill gradually once fully cured, and watch it through the first fill.

Common mistakes

  • Patching from inside. Beyond the certification issue, an interior patch on a stock tank sits under standing water and sediment with animals working against it.
  • Patching over rust scale. You've bonded to a layer that's already separating from the steel.
  • Not addressing why it froze. A tank that split at the waterline will split again next winter in the same place. A tank heater, partial draining, or a different siting is the actual fix; the patch buys you the seasons in between.
  • Refilling before full cure. Standing water weight on a fresh repair.

When this won't work

  • Any repair where the cured patch contacts the drinking water. No potable-water certification.
  • Widespread rust-through. If the bottom flexes or you can push through it in more than one place, you're patching material that's failing everywhere. Replace the tank.
  • Automatic waterer supply lines. Anything pressurized is out.
  • Structural deformation. A tank that's gone out of shape isn't a patching job.

How long it lasts

Cured Solar Patch is rigid, waterproof, and rated to 200°C dry and 90°C wet — it handles the sun and the freeze cycles as well as the tank does. On a galvanized tank, the honest expectation is that the repair outlasts the metal next to it, which is the part worth watching.
