How to Repair Polyethylene (When Nothing Else Sticks)

If you're reading this, there's a decent chance you've already tried something and it failed.
That's the normal experience with polyethylene. It's not that you did the repair wrong — it's that most repair products physically cannot bond to it, and almost none of them say so on the package.
Why polyethylene defeats most adhesives
Polyethylene has very low surface energy. In practical terms, that means liquids bead up on it instead of wetting out across it, and adhesives can't get the microscopic surface contact they need to grip.
It's also chemically inert — it doesn't react with much of anything, which is why it's used for chemical tanks in the first place. Adhesives that work by lightly etching a surface have nothing to etch.
Those two properties are exactly why polyethylene is chosen for water tanks, stock tanks, kayaks, fuel containers, and chemical storage. The material is doing its job. It's just doing it to your repair too.

- RV holding tanks
- Fuel and utility containers
- Poly sheet, liners, and irrigation components
If it's a plastic tank and it flexes rather than cracking when you push on it, it's very likely polyethylene.
What actually works
Solar Patch is rated for polyethylene. It's a fiberglass-reinforced patch that stays workable until UV light hits it, then cures rigid — so you get a mechanical shell bonded across the damage rather than an adhesive trying to chemically grip a surface that won't cooperate.
Step by step
- Drain below the damage if it's a tank, and let it dry completely.
- Scuff the area. This matters more on polyethylene than on any other material. You're creating mechanical texture on a surface that gives you nothing chemically. Go about two inches past the damage in every direction, and scuff hard enough to visibly dull the surface.
- Clean and dry. Poly picks up oils readily and holds them. Wipe it thoroughly and let it dry fully.
- Cut the patch to cover the damage plus about an inch of sound material all around — and past the end of any crack. Poly flexes, and flex propagates cracks.
- Press it on, working outward from the center into any curve.
- Cure 5–10 minutes in direct sunlight, or faster under a UV light.
Common mistakes
- Not scuffing enough. On poly, a light scuff isn't enough. You want visible texture.
- Cleaning with the wrong thing. Some cleaners leave residue that makes the problem worse. Plain and thoroughly dry beats chemically clean and slightly oily.
- Patching a flexing crack too tightly. Cover past the end of the crack, not just the crack.
- Assuming the last product's failure means all will fail. Different mechanism, different result.

When this won't work
- Pressurized tanks or lines. Solar Patch is not rated for pressurized systems.
- Drinking water. No potable-water certification. Don't use it on tanks or lines carrying drinking water for people or livestock.
- Polypropylene. Related material, not on the rated list. Check before assuming.
- Structural failure. A bulging, deformed, or largely failed tank wall isn't a patching job.
- Reactive chemical contents. Check compatibility with what the container actually holds.
How long it lasts
Cured Solar Patch is rigid, waterproof, and rated to 200°C dry and 90°C wet. On an outdoor tank that means it handles sun and weather along with the tank itself.
